TURIN, Feb. 24 – Torino have sacked coach Marco Baroni and appointed Roberto D’Aversa on a short-term deal, the club said in a statement and as Channel NewsAsia reported.
Torino sit 15th in Serie A, three points above the relegation zone, after one win in their last seven games, a slump capped by Sunday’s 3-0 loss at Genoa, according to Channel NewsAsia and AP.
Why the change
Torino are on 27 points from 26 matches and were also knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Inter, while a 6-0 league loss to Como added pressure on Baroni, Football Italia wrote.
Contract and background
The club said D’Aversa has signed a contract through June 30, 2026, and confirmed his appointment in an official statement, Torino FC said.
D’Aversa, a former midfielder born in Stuttgart, has managed Parma, Sampdoria, Lecce and Empoli, and he previously guided Parma from Serie C back to Serie A, according to Torino’s announcement and Football Italia.
Next steps
Torino host Lazio on Sunday as D’Aversa takes over with the club still in a relegation fight, Channel NewsAsia reported.
Italian outlet SportNews.bz said Torino’s run of one win in seven left them only three points clear of the drop and that D’Aversa has been tasked with steadying results.
